How to find the time to exercise in a busy parent schedule

As a parent, it can be hard to find time for yourself. You want to be there for your kids and support them in their activities, so finding one or two hours for the gym or a class is not always easy.

Some of the ideas below depend on your work schedule and the kind of training you enjoy. But even a few push-ups during soccer practice can be a way to fit movement into a busy day.

Being a parent does not mean giving up your own health and hobbies. Your kids also learn from what you do. Here are a few ways I try to make time for training or include the kids.

Get the kids involved

One way to combine family time and exercise is to involve the kids. Many children have plenty of energy and enjoy moving, so adapting your workout to include them can help you spend time together while staying active.

Find a gym with a kids' area

I do not have this option in my town, but I have seen gyms elsewhere with a dedicated area for children while their parents train. I think this is a useful option and something I would like to see more gyms offer.

Make your work schedule work for you

Clock representing time management

If your job allows some flexibility, adjusting your working hours may help you make room for training. A few options to consider are:

  • Start work earlier so you can finish earlier.
  • Use part of your lunch break for a short workout, while still leaving time to eat.
  • Fit a shorter session into an available gap in your day.

Keep the workout focused

A gym session can take longer than planned when there is a lot of chatting or time spent deciding what to do next. Having a simple plan can help you use the time you have, without rushing your exercises or cutting out the rest you need between sets.

Create a home gym

Training at home can make it easier to fit a session around family life and check in on the kids between sets. This is an option I would consider if I had more space in my apartment.

Fit movement around the kids' activities

While your kids are at soccer or football practice, there may be an opportunity for a short workout nearby. It can also encourage other parents to join you. Choose something that lets you stay available when your children need you.

Do not overlook the weekend

The word Weekend

If training is difficult to fit into the working week, the weekend may give you another opportunity. I usually train on Saturday or Sunday, and I find that it helps me unwind after a busy week.

I have been fortunate to have a family who understands that training matters to me and helps me make time for it. Finding a routine that works for your family is more useful than trying to follow a perfect schedule.
