A Day at Starke Viking: The Rawest Strongman Competition in Sweden

Last week, I had the unexpected pleasure of attending a strongman competition called Starke Viking. It wasn’t part of my initial plan; I was in the area to have fun with my kids. However, the experience was so exhilarating that it left a lasting impression on me. The camaraderie, the raw physicality, and the unique events made it a day to remember. Here’s a detailed account of what transpired and my newfound resolve to participate in this competition next year.

What is Starke Viking?

The Essence of a Truly Raw Competition

Starke Viking is a strongman and strongwoman competition that premiered in 2017. Held under the flag of the Vikingaleden Association at the Vikingating in Nysäter, it aims to emulate the ancient strength competitions with a modern twist. What sets it apart is its raw nature—competitors are not allowed to use any aids like magnesium, straps, or suits, and they compete barefoot. This approach is meant to showcase true, unassisted strength, making it Sweden’s rawest competition.

The Events of Starke Viking 2024

This year’s events were unique and grueling, designed to test every facet of strength and endurance. Here’s a breakdown of the competitions:

Log Lifting

Competitors lift a log in a clean and press style, showcasing upper body and core strength.

Iron Ball Walk

Participants walk as many lengths as possible with an iron ball strapped to their leg, testing endurance and leg strength.

Chain Rotation

Holding a chain, competitors spin as fast as they can, earning points for each complete rotation without the chain touching the ground.

Ring the Bell

A weight is swung up to ring a bell located at shoulder height, requiring explosive power and precision.

Log Deadlift

Unlike traditional deadlifts, this involves lifting along the length of the log, with each lift progressively heavier than the last.

My Experience at the Competition

An Unexpected Adventure

Despite not planning to attend, I was thrilled by the energy and the raw display of strength. The scorching heat was a challenge, and I regrettably forgot sunscreen, ending the day with sunburned shoulders. Yet, the excitement of the competition overshadowed any discomfort. Watching the competitors, I was amazed by their determination and the supportive atmosphere. Even the competitors were cheering each other on, creating a sense of community that was truly inspiring.

The Spirit of Starke Viking

A Community of Strength

One of the most remarkable aspects of Starke Viking is the camaraderie. It’s not just about individual strength but also about supporting and encouraging fellow competitors. This spirit of unity and mutual respect is what makes the event special. Whether you're a seasoned athlete or a beginner, everyone is welcomed and cheered on.

My Decision to Compete

Setting a New Goal

Being part of such a vibrant and supportive community has inspired me to take part in the Starke Viking next year. My goal is not just to participate but to compete to the best of my ability. While winning would be amazing, being part of the event and experiencing the thrill firsthand is my primary objective.

Creating a Training Plan

The training plan and everything related to it will come later, still planning it.

Staying Motivated

Keeping the End Goal in Sight

Maintaining motivation will be key to my success. I plan to stay focused by setting small, achievable goals and celebrating each milestone. Joining a local gym or training group can also provide additional support and accountability.

What I Learned from Watching Starke Viking

Observing the competition gave me valuable insights into the level of dedication and mental toughness required. Here are some key takeaways:
